Friesach is known as the oldest town in the Carinthia region of Austria. The town has a beautiful and dramatic setting in a valley surrounded by hills and has several medieval castles and fortifications, two of which are at least partially shown in this jigsaw puzzle. The entire area has a somewhat turbulent past, having been occupied over the centuries by Roman, Celtic and Slavonic tribes. Many buildings in Friesach date from the 13th century and the town’s highlights include the main square, the castle keep and a display of beautiful Gothic art. Once a year the town gates are locked, the residents dress in authentic costume and celebrate the town’s medieval past.
