A playful, energetic dog the Dalmatian is thought to hale from the Dalmatia area of Croatia, thus its name. Dalmatians are born all white, but after about a month they begin to develop black or brown spots and that process continues throughout their life. Long associated with fire engines, the Dalmatian was used as a carriage dog in bygone centuries. Those dogs would escort horse drawn carriages through the street, acting as both a guide and a path clearer for the horses. The Dalmatian in this jigsaw puzzle, though, seems to have had enough activity for the day and is content to rest for now.
