The royal palaces of the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. The Forbidden City was the home of Chinese emperors for 500 years beginning in 1420. The complex consists of nearly 1000 buildings covering almost 200 acres. No one was allowed to enter or leave the complex without the emperor’s consent, thus the name.
