Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan. It is a dormant volcano, last erupting in 1708. Because of its perfect shape, the Japanese see Mount Fuji as a sacred mountain. Artists come from all over the world to photograph and paint the image, as you can understand from the scene in this online jigsaw puzzle. The best viewpoint of Mount Fuji is from the train approximately forty-five minutes out of Tokyo. Unfortunately, the view is often blocked by clouds. If visiting the area solely for the view of Mount Fuji, plan to be there during the cold season and view it during either late evening or early morning hours.
A perfect relaxing stop would be at Fuji Five Lake, which is at the northern base of the mountain and the hot spring resort area. Climbing Mount Fuji is possible between July and August. There are a variety of routes.
