Each August the Peace Memorial Ceremony is held in Hiroshima, Japan in memory of those who died in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. The ceremony includes releasing floating lanterns on the Motoyasu River which runs through ground zero of Hiroshima’s atomic blast. The lanterns often include personal inscriptions from family members of the deceased. The annual ritual is meant to help promote world peace.
