A cozy quilted polar bear. Speaking of polar bears, some people have a tradition of doing a “polar bear plunge” on the first day of the year, taking a swim in their local body of water, regardless of freezing temperatures. While cold plunging and swimming is a longtime tradition of Nordic cultures, the first documented New Year’s Day polar bear plunge event in the United States was in 1904 in Boston, Massachusetts in Dorchester Bay.
